Covid-19 generation
Covid-19 generation
Walking for hours under a blazing sun to sell mangoes, spending 12 to 13 hours a day repairing flat tires or breaking rocks in a quarry... Emilienne (13 years old), Roger (13 years old) and Marc (15 years old) never imagined that they would have to provide meals for their families so quickly. The economic recession linked to Covid has plunged their family into extreme poverty, which has cut them off from school. They were dropped out of school like 24 million children in the world, according to UNESCO.
And once school stops, threats that have been decreasing for years come back: child labor (Unicef figures to be released in June), gender-based violence, and child marriage. Unicef predicts that covid will be responsible for 10 million child marriages by 2030. Emilienne's grandmother is already talking about marrying her off in a year or two... while the young girl dreams of returning to school.
Report in Burkina Faso on these collateral victims of Covid.
